In 1980, a group of local musicians with a desire to play and also to build an appreciation for symphonic music in Schuylkill County formed the Schuylkill County Orchestra. At that time, the small group, of approximately 30 musicians, practiced in a church basement and held one concert per season. In the beginning, it was rare to have a soloist perform with the group due to the lack of funds.
26 years later, the orchestra exhibits its growth with over 60 musicians and a subscription series of at least 3 concerts. Hundreds attend the concerts, which feature soloists from various areas of the country. In addition, the orchestra has grown with its outreach to the Schuylkill County youth by means of its educational programs including the Schuylkill Youth Symphony Orchestra, Young Artist Competition, 4th Grade Education Concert, and Free Admission to Students
Our mission is to support and maintain a symphony orchestra in order to provide its area communities with cultural and educational access to both traditional and symphonic music of the highest standards while offering local musicians the opportunity to exhibit and develop their talents
Since, 1982 Donald Spieth has been Music Director of the Schuylkill Symphony Orchestra. As founder and Music Director of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra he brought a level of professionalism and enthusiasm with him that has fueled the orchestra to its current standing.
